When it comes to singing, I believe there are no bad sounds, just unintentional or unsustainable sounds. Are you in the driver's seat of your voice? This is where functional vocal training comes in and this is what I specialize in. What do you dream of being able to sing? How do you want to use your voice as an instrument or as an extension of your acting? It comes down to technique combined with your personal artistry and this is the work that lights me up! The magical moment when you are able to make a sound that you never thought was possible.....It's pure gold and can create a whole new world of possibilities for you as a vocalist. I've been very fortunate to have a wealth of training from the best vocal pedagogy experts both in Canada and the US and I'm always on the lookout for the latest and most innovative information about training singers to use their voices creatively and safely.
"I aim to be the voice teacher that I couldn't find when I was a teenager"
~Rebecca Poff
When I joined the world of professional music theatre, I was armed with an undergraduate degree in classical voice from Western University and a Diploma in Operatic Performance from The University of Toronto. At the time I was fortunate because my training helped me to cross over to shows like The Phantom of the Opera and Show Boat with their neo classical and golden era styles of singing – but theatre was changing and fast! I had to negotiate new vocal techniques to be able to stay relevant and - quite frankly – employed, and my western classical vocal training wasn’t cutting it any longer.
Canadian music theatre artists needed to become versatile to stay relevant, so I was always learning new ways to use my voice. The theatre industry continues to change rapidly and dramatically as it incorporates pop, rock, folk, R&B, jazz, blues and other contemporary commercial (CCM) genres of music. A music theatre performer needs to be flexible and good vocal technique combined with voice science is essential to surviving an 8-shows-a-week schedule.
This is my strength as a voice teacher and coach. I’ve lived through three decades of working professionally with all the changes in music theatre singing over that time.
My goal for my students is to be vocally prepared for their careers and all the demands that will be placed on their voices.
I’ve had the pleasure of working with theatre students at Sheridan College on their voices for the past 17 years and as the program has changed, the students have become increasingly versatile and aware of their voices as instruments and as a tool that supports their acting.
These experiences are the backbone of what you will gain from working together with me.
